I’ve become a bit of a fivethirtyeight addict. In his latest senate prediction update, Nate Silver discussed Libby Dole’s dirty “Godless” video. This is the most disgusting political ad that I have seen this cycle. It ranks up there with Grucci’s Rape radio spot, which led to my participation in Tim Bishop’s (D-NY) successful 2002 House campaign.
Dole, a politician I once respected (if disagreed with) and even hoped might be McCain’s VP pick, should be ashamed. Her advertisement accuses Kay Hagen of accepting money at “secret meetings” with godless atheists. The spot has an interesting shot of Hagen standing next to a man who appears to be one of those godless atheists. (According to the Independent Weekly, the man is actually a theology student at the Harvard Divinity School.)
Wow. This is wrong on so many levels. Let’s start with: Hagen is an elder at the First Pres Church of Greensboro and a sunday school teacher. But, let’s not forget: SO WHAT??? What if she was an atheist? Okay, perhaps some people might be concerned that an atheist wouldn’t share their views on a progressive income tax, job growth, or how the Iraq war has been a wonderful recruiting tool for Al Qaeda. But where, oh where, does Dole get the idea that talking with an atheist gives you cooties? Or have the audacity to falsely imply that atheism is a contagious disease that otherwise good people might catch from contact with atheists.
This race is close. Very close. I ask you to join with me and to donate a few bucks to Hagen’s campaign. We need to send a message to Dole and to politicians like her that this type of negative campaigning is unacceptable.
*Yes, I know that I am not a resident of North Carolina. What Libby Dole has done here cannot be left alone, lest we all lose out.
The Steak Experiment October 25, 2008

Michael and I have decided to try dry aging some rib eye. Per instructions, my fridge is cold – circa 37 on the bottom shelf. As well, I have cleaned the beef and I am going to rewrap it every day. I know this sounds like a lot of effort, but we have high hopes for the process. 10 to 14 days, here we come!
Update: day the first
Ye olde fridge got a little frosty last night. Not so cold that the need froze, but down to 33. Now, this is on the über low end of our ideal range of above 32 and below 39, but i’ll take it over too warm.
I have adjusted the temp and added a baking rack for better air flow. Now, if only I had a portable fan!
Day the Eighth: what a great steak! Ate well and was happy. None of us got sick. Let’s just wait for day the eleventh.
Day the Eleventh: wow. we all agree, a more steaky flavor, much tastier. . . how fantastic!

It is that time of year, when the leaves are turning, the last diverse harvests of the farmers markets are turning up, and the air is crisp. It is in that spirit that I whipped up a tasty little dish last night.
Sometimes, the simplist dishes are the best. Sautee shallots, garlic, baby squash and zuchini. Little salt and pepper, quite tasty. I mean, I could use some heat, but we cook with the ingredients we have, not the ones we want!
A few days ago, we did a quick fried tofu with terraki, and some fantastic fried green tomatoes. Lovely!
Homeland Security and the Pandas October 11, 2008

She and I decided to head to the zoo today. It is a beautiful DC day, the sun is shining, the leaves turning, and it is still warm. I love the fall. Not as much as those first days of summer, but quite a bit.
Anyway, we are gradually making our way up connecticut, and we have been sidetracked. Yes, that is right, She decided to go clothes shopping at Secondi, a consignment store in dupont. Needless to say, I am chilling over on the men’s couches.
I have discovered that the national zoo has closed it’s south eastern gates because of the orange threat level. Seriously? The zoo, which has never shown a concern for guards, no limits our access?
And because of the orange threat? We have always been at war with Oceania. And the war is going swimmingly, just you believe me. Sheesh. Homeland security has shifted the American mindset into a state of perpetual terror. Not cool, my friends, not cool.
